Fire Buffer Zone
Creation Of FBMZ For Asset Protection
Understanding an effective fire buffer zone does not require the removal of all vegetation. Rather, vegetation must be designed and maintained in a way that limits the opportunity for vertical and horizontal fire spread in the vicinity of surrounding buildings or assets to be protected. Retaining some established trees can even be beneficial in terms of protecting the building or assets from wind and ember attack.
Fire buffer zones must be maintained in a low fuel condition throughout the bushfire season. The FMBZ's area must be managed and kept in a minimum fuel condition at all times where the quantity of fine fuels throughout the vegetation profile are significantly and uniformly reduced throughout, to the extent that the passage of fire will be restricted.
